South London based artist, producer and beat maker, Al Dobson Jr is a rising enigmatic figure on the worldwide underground music scene. Living that basement cats lifestyle, Jr explores rhythmic expression and other abstract truth in his raw and unique productions which traverse the boundaries between hip-hop, jazz, funk and broken beat.
His collaboration on 22a’s debut 12” described as ‘lo-fi smudged instrumentals, effortlessly spanning moments in deep jazz, electronic and African rhythms’, was critically acclaimed. This sudden success inspired Jr to release more of his home-brewed beats on vinyl and reinstated his belief in the format.
As one of the original members of the People’s Situation Ensemble, Jr has been a key figure in bringing real jazz to a new wave of music lovers. Notable releases on labels 22a, Izwid, Sey Music, Jr Sounds and Rhythm Section International have also garnered support far and wide from the likes of George Clinton to Dennis Ayler.
Jr’s productions and unique DJ sets from obscure yet dance floor friendly grooves & unreleased dubplates to classic jazz & funk have made him heavily sought after. Since stepping on the scene in 2014, he has quietly established himself as one of the UK’s most promising underground producers.
His debut full length on Rhythm Section Int. is the album Rye Lane Volume ii & iii (2016)
